Ventantonio Questions Bridgewater Emergency Response to Storm

Jim Ventantonio Questions Bridgewater Emergency Response

While Thousands are Without Power in Bridgewater

Bridgewater, NJ – Oct 31, 2011 - Jim Ventantonio, candidate for Bridgewater Mayor, today criticized Bridgewater Township elected officials for their lack of communication to Bridgewater residents in the aftermath of the late October snowstorm that left thousands without power in Bridgewater.

“There are between 1,000 and 6,000 households without power in Bridgewater for nearly two days now,” said Ventantonio. “The number is only an estimate because that’s all that’s provided by the power companies.  Bridgewater Township has been silent – no phone calls, no information posted on the website, absolutely no outreach to residents.”

Ventantonio noted that surrounding communities have reverse emergency call systems in place to update residents.  “Township officials had the opportunity to improve since Hurricane Irene hit us in late October,” he said. “The lack of responsiveness and communication to Bridgewater residents from the current Mayor and Council seems to be standard operating procedure all year long, but in an emergency like this, it’s inexcusable.”

Ventantonio said that nearby towns have called and left notice on road closings, open grocery stores and gas stations.  “Many residents are only able to connect on laptops and cell phones for brief periods of time, and they are desperately seeking emergency information, as well as finding out what township officials are doing to expedite restored service.  As Mayor, communication and a strong emergency response system will be top priorities in my administration,” he said.
