'Gay Conversion' Therapy Ban Gains Support of More Than 112K Petitioners

Bill that would protect minors from controversial counseling techniques clears Senate committee.

More than 110,000 people have signed a petition calling for a ban on so-called "Gay Conversion" therapy that attempts to change minors' sexual orientation, and it appears their voices have been heard in Trenton.

The New Jersey Senate's Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee voted 7-1 Monday to advance a bill to the full Senate that would outlaw "gay conversion" therapy.

"The American Psychiatric Association has determined that the practice of counseling to change sexual orientation poses a great risk, including the likelihood or severity of depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior of those undergoing therapy," bill co-sponsor Sen. Raymond Lesniak wrote on his Facebook blog.

"This legislation seeks to prevent the harm done to children... from the practice of counseling to change sexual orientation. "

The Senate bill would prevent any counselor — psychiatrist, social worker, therapist, etc. — from attempting therapy to change minors' sexual orientation but would allow professionals to provide counseling that offers support and coping skills for minors struggling with their sexuality. Counselors who violate the law would face sanctioning under their professional licensing board.

The petition — with 111,863 signatures as of Monday afternoon — was launched by Parsippany High School senior Jacob Rudolph, who testified Monday before the Senate committee.

Rudolph, who came out in a speech in front of his classmates, said, "Perhaps the most cruel part of anti-gay conversion therapy is that these young people cannot even defend themselves from being subjected to this harmful practice,” he said. “I am not broken. I am not confused. I do not need to be ‘fixed.’

“I’m thrilled that the New Jersey Legislature is moving quickly to ban the use of anti-gay ‘conversion’ therapy on minors, and I’m incredibly proud that my story and my petition have helped give a voice to the young people harmed by this dangerous practice,” Rudolph said.

Jewell Kutzer, one of the nearly 112,000 to sign the petition, wrote "as an ordained minister, I find the practice of trying to 'fix' people who are gay to be scandalous. There is no justification for this practice in the health field or the religious field."

The Senate bill was initially introduced in the chamber in October, when it was referred to the Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee. It must clear both houses of the Legislature before heading to Gov. Chris Christie.

This ban on reparative therapy is a direct assault on the right of parents to do what they feel is best for their children. It is another example of the state banning free speech it doesn't like, attacking religious beliefs and interfering in the raising of children. If passed, this law could pit children against parents and create chaos in the home.

I have to be very careful with my words or the patch moderator will intervene but you and some others are so misinformed about the subject of sexual orientation that it almost scares me that you're out there among us. Patch, is that ok? If not I'll tone it down lol.

Therapy is based on scientific practice and training. Not religious beliefs. Parents are still free to torture their children and send them to religious re-education camps or counseling as long as the "educators" are not hiding behind "professional licenses."

There is no science behind this "therapy", it's known to be a sham, scam, and a flimflam, it's a bigger lie than psychic readings and crystal balls, these supposed therapist should be arrested for abuse and torture.

No government should allow child abuse - and that's exactly what "reparative therapy" has been deemed by every legitimate authority on psychiatric care and child health and welfare in the world. If the parents want to abuse their child and subject them to this evil, then they deserve the chaos that comes with it.

Dear Jack B Confused, You can't figure out what your position on the issue is. You and your ilk are never for government intervention in our private lives. Yet here again another example for the arms of government to protect institutionalization and irreligious torture for institutions and lethal programs to 'fix' (Henry VIII's Rack in the Tower) gay minors. How would you feel if your son or daughter was gay and came home after a whole day at school being terrorized and bullied. only to come home to a monster like you telling your child to be - must be - something they are not. Your house is a torture chamber demanding the arms of government to intercede putting you in a jail cell.

Have you all lost your mind??? As a therapist and a parent, trying to coerce a child into believing he/she is not gay is ABUSE. Jack B Goode (nice try but not) the liberal lawmakers. Do your research. Your great pal Michelle Bachman's husband (conservative) collected hundreds of thousands of dollars to attempt to convert those who believe they were gay. Have you seen him? As for your > I don't want knee-jerk Government that takes away choice and rights because of pressure from special interest groups< then we must assume you currently have a child that shows interest in the things normally associated with the opposite gender. And that you want to take advantage of this therapy, well that's your right so go ahead and take your chances. But if you don't have a family member you want to be part of this therapy, then why do you feel so strongly that it's such a good idea?

If you were in college when you went to conversion therapy, you were likely already 18 or over, and this law would not have affected your situation at all. Anyone 18 and over will continue to be perfectly free to pay to get smacked straight all they want. However, parents will no longer be permitted to force their underage kids to get smacked by quack therapists.

Let's see, if a child feels uncomfortable being attracted to the same sex and the parent wants to help their child by seeking psychiatric help, then the parent and psychiatrist go to jail. Seems fair to me.

Apparently the only behavior that can't be modified is sexual preference, unless you are bi-sexual then change is daily.

Sexual preference isn't "behavior", and if your child is uncomfortable about their sexual feelings (as indeed, what teenagers isn't having sexual identity growing pains of some sort), the answer is to work with them and help them adjust to their reality. Not "fix" what's not broken.

If a child does feel uncomfortable when he/she discovers they're attracted to the same sex in forming a romantic relationship, it's caused by the way the parents reacted to the whole subject while they were growing up, and also all the ways religious teachings and some segments of society condemned it as sinful and an aberration.
And as for >the only behavior that can't be modified is sexual preference< I don't know if it's the only behavior but you're 100% correct about sexual preference.

How many of you actually read the Change.org petitions that show up in your e mail. Many of them are absolute nonsense and all of them are promoting someone's personal agenda. Many times the agenda is a singular agenda and is not aimed at a societal isse. Read the petition before you go jumping into the fray. Personally, I think the therapy that is targeted is flawed and that people should be more accepting, but do not just ignore the content of the petition or any Change.org petition tht is thrown in front of you. The mechanism of signing the petition is suspect, it requires a mouse click and nothing more.

JONAH still exists and is based in Jersey City, NJ. While heavily focused on orthodox Jewish men, they have programs for all (Jews and non-Jews, males and females). You can check JONAH's website (jonahweb.org) for confirmation and further details. Jonah was founded and continues to be led by Arthur Abba Goldberg, a felon who was convicted of financial fraud before he shifted focus to his reparative therapy crusade. You can learn more about Goldberg on Wikipedia or via google. JONAH is currently being sued by the Southern Poverty Law Center for consumer fraud.

YES! If you are sexually attracted to the same sex, you are gay. It's doesn't matter if you act on those feelings. If you're masquerading in a heterosexual relationship, pretending to be straight, that doesn't change who really turns you on.

Man, THAT must suck! I would lose my mind if I had to pretend to be attracted to men when what I am really turned on by is women. All because my family and friends are close minded bigots and I don't have the cojones to be who I really am.

The 4 involved in the lawsuit were not from NJ, the suit was brought by SPLC, not by a local . I don't think that there is anyone providing this type of therapy in NJ, or at least there are none that I can find and that is after a pretty exhaustive on line search.

The Jonah website shows it to be a shell structure, there is no indication that it is offering Gay Reparation Therapy in NJ, the website tracks to a city in Canada, and the phone number did not answer when I called it. The web page states it is designed to deal with issues of Jewish community and there is a law suit brought by 4 persons, none of whom live and or work in NJ. I am looking to see who is supplying this therapy in NJ , I can find no one advertising or offering Gay Reparation Therapy in NJ other than Jonah, which appears to be a shell.

Gay conversion therapy Are you kidding me with this concept. The very people who support this joke called therapy are the religious right and the right wing conservatives who also are the same ones strongly supporting the US Consitution. People in the United States have the right to their own sexual orientation. This is why we are a free country including freedom of speech and expression. You have the right to practice your own religion and you have the right to your own sexual orientation.

Steve Kenny, I was just looking at PFOX's site... the president is from NJ; I know the founder. PFOX is not a therapeutic group, though it has actively promoted and supported NARTH and religious-based reparative therapy. JONAH International, an anti-gay Jewish RT center founded in Jersey City has had cases of strange, potentially dangerous therapies reported over the years. The group is in operation and is in NJ, so it I believe would be affected by this law if passed.

One note, and this comes from years working on this story as a journalist (I went undercover in one of these things years ago - http://ow.ly/jihWE ):. There are a relative handful of these places and they are spread out all over the country. Many are residentially based, so some conservative Christian parents send their gay kids away to "pray away the gay" sometimes for months or more. And many practitioners do so covertly under their own names; no one would know they are psychiatrists and psychologists doing RT unless caught by an investigative reporter, found by a certification organization, or ratted out by a parent or teen (which happens). So could it be happening in New Jersey? It likely is.
