Extravaganza Honors Athletes, Awards Scholarships

The Joetta Clark Diggs Sports Foundation holds its annual extravaganza.

The Joetta Clark Diggs Sports Foundation, Inc. held its 6th Annual Sports Extravaganza fundraiser on Sept. 23 at the

This year's was presented by Johnson & Johnson, and was themed “A Conversation with Excellence." Despite the inclement weather, approximately 350 guests attended this year’s black tie affair.

The evening got off to a great start with the Horizon NJ Health VIP Reception, and culminated with guests having the opportunity to engage in candid conversations with accomplished athletes, including six-time Olympic Medalist Jackie Joyner Kersee, NFL Hall of Fame Inductee and Super Bowl Champion Harry Carson, NFL Super Bowl Champion Bart Oates, three-time Olympic Medalist Jearl Miles Clark, Olympians Hazel Clark-Riley and Norm Tate, and Olympic Coach JJ Clark.

The audience engaged in discussion topics, ranging from “tell us about the most difficult team decision you had to make" to "how did it impact you when the Black Athletes in the 1968 Olympics held up their fists.”  And a question and answer session with the athletes was moderated by Diggs, herself a four-time Olympian and executive director of the Joetta Clark Diggs Sports Foundation.

“The extravaganza is always something we look forward to, because it allows us to showcase the work that we did all year, provide scholarships and thank our sponsors,” she said.

The evening's festivities also included live musical entertainment, a silent auction and $1,000 scholarships and laptops presented to students Aisha Jackson, from Hillsborough High School; Hailey Guhr, from Sussex Tech High School; and Trey Patterson, from North Plainfield High School.

AThe proceeds from the event will help the Joetta Clark Diggs Sports Foundation continue its work conducting free health and fitness seminars, track camps and other programs to grade schools, high schools and community organizations, as well as providing scholarships to select student athletes throughout New Jersey.
