Members of the Raritan Valley Chinese School Lion Dance Team welcome the new year with the traditional Lion Dance. The Chinese Culture Club started 29 years ago and became affiliated with the Raritan Valley Chinese School. “This a true marriage between the club and the school,” said Robert Lanoff, who serves as club leader along with Shu Chang. Both organizations have grown so large—the club has the largest membership of the county’s 4-H groups—that they must meet at Raritan Valley Community College.

Lions welcome the new year at the Chinese Culture Club and Raritan Valley Chinese School's celebration.

Somerset County 4-H’s Chinese Culture Club, in conjunction with the Raritan Valley Chinese School [RVCS], marked the year 4709 [The Year of the Rabbit] with a celebration Saturday at the 4-H Center on Milltown Road. More than 200 people took part in the biggest event of the year for the school.

Students demonstrated their language skills and earned certificates for academic achievement during the celebration. Each grade performed during the program, which included the traditional Lion Dance and the Dance Team’s Taiwan Mountain Dance, plus the not-so-traditional “Lady Gaga Remix” and the Adult Line Dance Team’s performance to “Quarter After One.”

Guests also had the opportunity to dine on traditional Chinese fare.
