Patch Asks: How Do You Promote Safety in the Water?
Patch invites moms and all residents to stop by for a chat about topics that matter to them.
Patch invites you and your circle of friends to help build a community of support for mothers and their families right here in Somerset County.
Each week in Moms Talk, our Moms Council of experts and smart moms take your questions, give advice and share solutions.
Have a question you would like to share, or just want to provide your opinion on the question of the week? Head over to the comments section to do just that.
So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a question from your Patch editors:
The summer has officially begun, with schools out, pools open and beach trips being planned. Families take trips down to the shore and to local swim clubs to spend days and fun times.
So the question is, how do you promote water safety with your kids, and keep them safe? How do you encourage them to be safe in the water and understand how to take care of themselves?

Wen said: We keep one of two gates pad-locked and the other has chimes and a battery operated alarm. There is a phone in the poolhouse for quick emergency contact and floats to be thrown. We are trained in CPR and have taught our child to swim to the steps as soon as we put in the pool. Even the pets have been in the pool and have been shown the steps.
Our child and her friends are not allowed in the pool without permission and an adult poolside under any circumstances.

Now with the grandchildren around we are so incredibly vigilant...we have locks on the gates and NEVER leave them alone for one second. Very young children are at such high risk and they are very determined to get in the water and they can be very creative trying to do so! John has covered all of it so well!

I tell my kids not to try and breathe under the water.
