Poll: What Should Open at the Bridgewater Commons Mall?
The mall is planning an expansion and more businesses.
Representatives from the Bridgewater Commons Mall recently spoke before the Bridgewater Township Council with a request for a change in the developer's agreement to allow for additional expansion.
Basically, the change will allow for Bloomingdale's to give up some of its rights for expansion, returning the space to the mall itself for future expansion.
The plan is to do this in three installments of 10,000 square feet each.
Mall representatives said a new restaurant will be coming in to the mall, but declined to say which one.
But we want to know what you think. What new restaurant would you like to see come to Bridgewater? Or would you rather see a new store open?
Take our poll and let us know what you are thinking, then tell us in the comments exactly what you want to see!

Bloomingdales replaced Sterns. If Bloomingdales isn't making enough money there than maybe the spot should go to a different level of shopper. Like J C Penny. But Pennys is in financial trouble right now due to some administration changes last year. Although their ad campaign might revive them. Considering that Bloomingdales is so high end, and that the Bridgewater location does not have as much selection as the Short Hills location, I think that a change in the level of department store in that location is what needs changing. Bridgewater already has a Lord and Taylor and a Macy's. Macy's owns Bloomingdales, if they would let go of their lease or are in default the mall might want to talk to something like Century 21 which has locations in Morristown and NYC. That would bring more shopping traffic to the mall and might actually help Macy's also, as C 21 does not always have everything. Anyway these are business decisions and should be handled by the businesses involved including the Landlord. This is NOT a decision for a planning board. The space is commercial and the free market makes the best decisions.

Trader Joe's but not the typical store that looks like an afterthought. If it is nice looking and the parking can be figured out fine-but no one wants to lug groceries all over the place. Century 21...NO...that place treats everyone as if they are criminals.

I love Bridgewater commons largely because it is not a Short Hills Mall and definitely not a Menlo or Freehold Mall. It's built its own little niche in the community and while the stores may mirror other malls, it remains a little more distinctive. I wouldn't want to see the lower end retailers as mentioned earlier like JCP, Sears, H&M, etc..., because then our mall will just be like everyone else and start losing its identity. The last thing we need is another coffee house or yogurt shop. Wouldn't mind seeing a place like The Capital Grill, Legal Seafoods, Fogo de Chao or something a little more unique than what you commonly find at malls like Menlo or Garden State Plaza. I also do not think the mall is an appropriate place for a Whole Foods or Trader Joes although, the adjacent properties on commons way or Rt 22 would be nice.

Exactly where do you think people are going to park???? That is the worse place for parking. The asphalt is not maintained especially under the parking garage. Lighting is terrible and it is one of the worst malls to get into and out of especially during holidays. I think towns ought to rethink any more commercial/retail space. Seems to me it's got to be a money maker, in some other inovative way, other than renting. Especially with more and more people going to the internet and shopping at their smaller local boutiques, i.e. Somerville, Westfield(assuming the parking doesn't kill those towns). Get the developers back to renovating our cities where we need them such as Plainfield and Elizabeth. Clean those up before you destroy more land and sprawl out anymore creating nothing but a maze.
R Velasquez
7:05 am on Friday, February 15, 2013
I agree. Should they expand the mall to allow for more stores and shopping space, then they should also put up additional parking spaces. I would prefer a covered multi-level parking garage similar to the one at Short Hills. I also hope that such multi-level garage will have more levels than the current three-level garage the mall has.

Actually, I was thinking that if the kids (tweens and teens) had somewhere to be instead of just hanging out in the halls and bouncing around and tossing balls around in a furniture store while people are trying to shop, then that would be a good thing.
The kids are going to be at the mall no matter what, why not have some activity that would attract the majority of them and you can avoid it if you'd like.

Bloomingdales should pack it in. The store is a ghost. Of course they are not going to expand. I vote for nordstrom. Or a great restaurant like Joe's American Grill, or paparazzi, or the like. Maybe a nyc style unique place with eclectic gourmet food. Something high end..let's keep it classy. We have the demographic. We should definitely open a trader joes or whole foods in area but not in mall. Maybe on circle? Or to replace that A&p that is closing down in pluckemin.
Gerianne
8:15 am on Wednesday, February 13, 2013
With the way things work, the A&P in Pluckemin will probably be replaced by a high end store, to compete with Kings. However, I think that the people living in the h\Hills and the older folks in Pluckemin Park need a quality, reasonably priced general market on the order of a small Acme or comething similar. I remember when the Somerset Shopping Center on the Circle featured both an Acme and a Grand Union. Great for competition, Now the area is left with Kings (overpriced) and Shop Rite Branchburg (too far for non driving folks) as well as Wegmans which is clear on the far end of Bridgewater.

I've seen them in smaller communities, but they always had doors directly to the outside. In other countries I've seen grocery stores in malls that were just like other stores, opening to the inside. It looked very weird to me to see people pushing shopping carts through a mall.
But yeah, as much as I'd love a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods in Bridgewater, the mall is not the place for it. (They probably couldn't afford the rent anyway.)
The old A&P in Pluckemin is becoming a Fresh Market. http://www.thefreshmarket.com/stores/store_locationsDetail.aspx?StoreID=157

Laura- don't go to the mall because I want to. Because of the Second Ammendment, my spouse makes me go with her at gunpoint. If it wasn't for the free Japanese food samples on the top level and watching the kids scream when they meet Santa at Christmastime, the whole thing would be cause of a complaint of spousal abuse.

We keep losing the good stores (ie Disney, Lindt) because the Mall has decided it wants to be more upscale like the Short Hills mall and keeps raising the rent to kick those types of stores out! I agree with some of the other comments - we don't want to be like the other malls! We need to keep some of the mid-range and fun stores to attract the middle class shopper too! We don't need a grocery store at the mall, but that old A&P in Manville would be a GREAT spot for a Whole Foods or Trader Joes! I say we remove Bloomindales which is just a waste of space and add either a great restaurant or split the space for a few smaller stores. Don't expand the mall anymore than it is. We've done enough building in B'wtr. I'd hate to become overly huge like the Garden State Plaza in Paramus - it's a NIGHTMARE to shop there! Way too big!
Rich

The lack of parking is reaching a critical point at key times. Time to stop building it out, this is not Paramus. My family likes the California Kitchen and Cheesecake Factory. We can go to the mall, shop, then have dinner. Another restaurant would be great if they can fit it in.

Bloomingdales is doing fine here...that space was set aside for a home store that they ultimately decided not to build. I think Nordstrom would be great, but they need more than 10,000 square feet to do it. I think something like Bobby's Burger Palace or PF Changs is more likely to be built along with smaller store offerings. A bookstore would be nice but I doubt it will happen. They don't have any other bookstore offering besides Barnes and Noble left.
