David Rathbun, 42, returned to his home on Riverview Road after 10:30 p.m., Thursday after he was reported missing by his wife Thursday morning.

According to Bridgewater Township Police Lt. Al Nicaretta, officers spotted Rathbun in the area of Riverview Road Thursday around 6:30 p.m., but did not get to him, and then were notified that he had returned home on his own after 10:30 p.m.

Nicaretta said Rathbun was not injured in any way, but walked home safely.

In addition to spotting Rathbun before he returned home, Nicaretta said police also found his vehicle parked in close proximity to the Raritan River, north of where the river goes under Route 28 near the border of Branchburg.

"When he got home, officers spoke to his wife, and found out that he was home safely," Nicaretta said.

According to Nicaretta, police had entered Rathbun into their database as a missing person after receiving the report from Rathbun's wife.

"We were concerned about his safety because [Mr. Rathbun] left his house in a hurry with his pajamas on after talking to his wife, and his car was seen in close proximity to the Raritan River," he said.

The search was done to ensure Rathbun's safety, Nicaretta said, because his exit from his home was very hasty.
