Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day w the Somerset Patriots
The Northern New Jersey Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will host an Awareness
Night with the Somerset Patriots as they take on the Camden Riversharks to raise awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research. The awareness event
will take place on July 15, 2012 at TD Bank Ballpark at 5:05 PM. Tickets are $10
each and are available for purchase online at www.pancan.org/newjersey. A portion
of each ticket sold will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
“We are thrilled to continue this relationship with the
Somerset Patriots for the third year in a row,” said Northern New Jersey
Co-Affiliate Coordinator Nicole Trella, who lost her mother-in-law to the
disease. “So much needs to be done to improve the staggering statistics associated
with pancreatic cancer. Events like this are one step in creating hope that one
day this disease will be a thing of the past.”
There will be an information table at the event that fans
will be able to visit to learn more about the disease and find out how they can
join the fight against pancreatic cancer. Fans and supporters attending the
game are encouraged to wear purple, the symbol of hope and awareness for

cancer death in the United
States and has the lowest relative survival
rate among leading cancer killers. This devastating disease has claimed the
lives of many public figures, including Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, actor
Patrick Swayze, Nobel
Prize winner Dr. Ralph Steinman, Carnegie Mellon
University Professor Dr. Randy Pausch, actor Michael Landon, and opera tenor
This year nearly 44,000 Americans will be
diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and more than 37,000 will die from the disease.
The five year relative survival rate is just six percent and has remained
largely unchanged in the last forty years because early detection tools and
effective treatments have yet to be developed.
Despite these sobering statistics, approximately two percent of the
National Cancer Institute’s federal research funding is allocated to pancreatic
