Cancer Support Community CNJ Expanding Latina Cancer Support Group - Group Now Meets Twice a Month

Bedminster, NJ, March 31, 2014 – Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey is expanding its Latina Women with Cancer Support Group to twice a month, both the second Saturday and fourth Thursday of the month at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanics, with breast cancer being the leading cause of death in Hispanic/Latina women in the United States.  15 percent of the population in the US identifies themselves as Hispanic or Latino, making the group the largest, fastest-growing and youngest US minority group.

The support group is conducted in Spanish and is open to any Latina woman who has been affected by cancer.  The group, like all CSCCNJ programs, is free of charge.

Adriana Cadavid, LCSW, who facilitates the group, has seen the benefits that the women who attend receive.  “When the ladies meet one another, even if it's for the first time, they see a mirror to their struggles. They are honest about their relationship problems, their feelings of abandonment, fear of discrimination, lack of trust in a ‘foreign society’ and lack of language skills,” said Cadavid.  “They are wonderful, they are genuine, funny and a great support to one another.”

People who attend support groups, according to CSCCNJ participants, have a 57 percent decrease in distress/depression and 60 percent of them felt less alone.

CSCCNJ’s program includes support groups, educational programs and healthy lifestyle classes (gentle exercise, relaxation and nutrition, to name a few) at no charge for anyone affected by cancer.  For more information about CSCCNJ or the Latina Women with Cancer Support Group, please contact Ellen Levine, Program Director, at elevine@cancersupportcnj.org or (908) 658-5400 ext. 102.  To learn more about CSCCNJ, visit the website at www.cancersupportcnj.org.
