This year’s awards were given in memory of Frank “Nap” Torpey, a community and civic leader whose contributions to the betterment of the Somerset County he loved were numerous.

The students, representing Somerville Middle School, Immaculate Conception School, Bridgewater–Raritan Middle School and Branchburg Middle School, were selected by their principals and teachers for academic excellence, outstanding character and contributions to school and community. Each received $200 contributed by the Torpey family, as well as certificates from the Elks and State Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman.

The award winning students, who all recently graduated eighth grade, are Ashlyn Jess and Timothy Vogel, Somerville Middle School; Sarah Adam and Stephen Walker, Immaculate Conception School, Somerville; Maria Lore and Arijit Dutta, Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School; and, Shannon Mulreed and Frankie Way, Branchburg Middle School.

“In addition to their exemplary classroom work, these students showed the maturity, character and leadership that define good citizenship,” said Somerville Elks Scholarship Chairperson Ron Czajkowski. “Each one of them is very deserving of this recognition.”

The Elks is a national service organization of men and women who work to promote and enhance the welfare of the communities where they are located through a variety of benevolent programs, including student scholarships, support for special needs children and events for military veterans. The Somerville Lodge, founded in 1903, is one of the oldest and largest in the state.
