March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Cancer Support Community CNJ hosts Frankly Speaking About Colorectal Cancer With Dr. Thangamani Seenivasan

Bedminster, NJ, February 20, 2014– March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and to raise awareness, Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey, located in Bedminster, is hosting a Frankly Speaking About Colorectal Cancer information session with Dr. Thangamani Seenivasan, oncology surgeon at Steeplechase Cancer Center at Somerset Medical Center.

According to the Colon Cancer Alliance, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. A lack of general public awareness of the disease has limited funding for research and has prevented early detection and knowledge of treatment options in many cases.  To help educate the public about colon cancer, CSCCNJ will be hosting their Frankly Speaking about Colorectal Cancer program on Thursday, March 6 from 1 – 2 p.m. at their offices in Bedminster at 3 Crossroads Drive.

Dr. Seenivasan, the leader of the Professional Advisory Board at CSCCNJ, said patients need to be empowered with information about this disease, which is the third most common cancer diagnosis in the US.  “Anyone diagnosed with colorectal cancer can be thrown off-guard. It can be a shock, it may be embarrassing.  It can be unnerving because cancer treatment is never easy to face.  It is not only important to learn what you can about the disease and its treatment but it’s also important to acknowledge your feelings and become well-informed. The more you know, the better you and your support network can get answers to your questions and gain strategies for quality care.”

Julie Patskin, a local colon cancer survivor, said attending program offerings at CSCCNJ gave her the knowledge she needed. “I have benefitted tremendously from the programs at the Cancer Support Community  Central NJ.   I learned how to prepare to speak to physicians – to prioritize my questions.  I highly recommend the programs at the Cancer Support Community!  They helped me to move forward and not just survive, but thrive!”

CSCCNJ’s program includes support groups, educational programs and healthy lifestyle classes (gentle exercise, relaxation and nutrition, to name a few) at no charge for anyone affected by cancer.  For more information about CSCCNJ or to register for the Frankly Speaking Program, please contact Ellen Levine, Program Director, at elevine@cancersupportcnj.org or (908) 658-5400 ext. 102.  To learn more about CSCCNJ, visit the website at www.cancersupportcnj.org or call us at 908-658-5400.
