Millington, NJ - February 2014 – To help encourage saving at a young age, Millington Savings Bank is conducting a community-wide essay contest open to all grade levels from K-12. Held in conjunction with America Saves Week (February 24 – March 1, 2014), a national event that encourages people to start a savings plan and build personal wealth, students are invited to write an essay on the importance of saving early and what they are saving for in particular.
“It’s no secret that good savings habits need to start early and, at Millington Savings Bank, we are encouraging young savers to make smart savings decisions,” commented Michael Shriner, President/CEO of Millington Savings Bank. “Whether the goals are small, such as saving for a new bike or a video game system, or larger, such as initiating a fund to defray the cost of college, there’s no time better than the present to start.”
A panel of judges will review submissions, and winners will be chosen in three grade categories: K-5, 6-8 and 9-12. The top winners from every category will each receive a $250 prize. Runner-up prizes of $25 will also be awarded for 2nd and 3rd place in each category. In addition to cash prizes, all entrants will receive a free coin bank to further encourage saving. While new accounts are not required for the contest, Millington Savings Bank will add $20 to every new statement savings account that is opened for any child from birth to 18 years of age during this national campaign week, as an incentive for kids to start their savings effort (minimum balance requirement of $50 for savings accounts).
Mr. Shriner continued, “We invite anyone with young kids to take part, have some fun, and learn some good lessons. For over 100 years, Millington Savings Bank has helped area residents value the importance of building and maintaining a savings account. That tradition continues to this day with the many savings products we offer, such as regular savings accounts, Opportunity Savings, Certificates of Deposit, holiday accounts and more.”
Essays may be submitted at any branch up to Friday, February 21st. Grand prize winners will be showcased during a special America Saves Week presentation at Millington headquarters on Saturday, March 1st at 10:00 a.m. To learn more or to pick up an entry form, visit any of the five Millington Savings Bank branches located in Millington, Basking Ridge (Riverwalk and Dewy Meadow), Martinsville and Bernardsville.
