Emergency Planning for Persons with Disabilities

HILLSBOROUGH – Somerset County Freeholder Deputy Director Mark Caliguire invites residents with disabilities and their caregivers to attend a free emergency-preparedness seminar next month.

“We’ve experienced two major storms here in New Jersey just in the past three years,” said Freeholder Caliguire, public health and safety liaison.  “It’s important that every household have an emergency plan in place.  This seminar will address the special needs of residents with disabilities and guide them and their caregivers in preparing such a plan.”

The program will be offered twice on Thursday, July 10, from noon to 2 p.m. and again from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Somerset County Emergency Services Training Academy at 402 Roycefield Road.  Space is limited.  To register, call Sharon Capehart at 908-541-5726 or email her at capehart@co.somerset.nj.us

Participants with disabilities and their caregivers will learn how to develop a simple emergency plan, find organizations and resources that help people with disabilities during emergencies, and have their emergency-preparedness questions answered.  Attendees will receive a free disaster kit – one per household while supplies last.

The program will be presented by the New Jersey Division of Disability Services.  It is co-sponsored by the Somerset County Board of Freeholders, Somerset County Office of Emergency Management and Somerset County Department of Human Services.  Funding is being provided by the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management.
