Weston Causeway Bridge in Franklin To Close for Repairs

(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a priority repair project to rehabilitate the Weston Causeway Bridge over the Delaware and Raritan (D&R) Canal in Franklin Township, Somerset County.

The $1.7 million, state-funded project will repair the structurally deficient bridge using a new timber and steel structure and a timber deck with an asphalt overlay. The bridge is located in a historic district and will be rehabilitated using New Jersey Historic Preservation Office standards to maintain its historic appearance with modern structural design and strength.

NJDOT’s contractor, Joseph Sanzari Construction, is scheduled to close the bridge, which connects Weston Canal Road in Franklin to South Main Street (County Road 533) in Manville via Wilhousky Street/Manville Causeway, on Wednesday, March 12.

A detour will be posted using Schoolhouse Road, Elizabeth Avenue, County Route 514/Amwell Road, and Millstone River Road. Variable message signs will be used to alert motorists of upcoming traffic pattern changes.

Once complete, the rehabilitated Weston Causeway Bridge will provide decades of safe travel for residents and motorists in the area. NJDOT anticipates the project to be complete by early summer.
