5 Facts About Donating Blood

The , in conjunction with Temple Sholom and other organizations, is hosting a blood drive Tuesday in honor of Ariel Fishman, who was hit by a cab, has had 10 surgeries and has needed 68 units of blood. The goal is to donate 100 units of blood. So, for anyone looking to donate as well, we present five things to remember before you head out to donate.

  • Few Donate—Only a total of three out of every 10 Americans actually donates blood.
  • Age Requirement—Donors must be 17 years of age or older, although some states allow for donors to be 16 years old as long as they have parental consent. Donors must also weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.
  • Wait Time Between—Donors must wait 56 days between donations of whole blood, as well as 112 days between double red cell donations.
  • Take Precautions—Donors should drink an extra four glasses of non-alcoholic drinks, avoid heavy exercise after donating, eat healthy meals and take care of themselves if they start to get dizzy.
  • Little Over an Hour—The entire process takes a little over an hour to complete, with the donation itself only taking about 10 minutes.
