5 Things to Know About Carnegie Hall

The fourth graders at are heading to Carnegie Hall Wednesday as part of their year-long music curriculum, and they will be singing and playing the recorder with several other schools. So in honor of this achievement, we present five things to know about Carnegie Hall.

  • 1891—The hall officially opened its doors in 1891, created by Andrew Carnegie, and celebrated the grand opening with a five-day music festival, beginning May 5.
  • Many Musicians—So many famous musicians have made their mark on Carnegie Hall, including pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski, who made his US debut in 1891, soprano Adelina Patti in 1893 and many more since then.
  • History of Pianists—The hall has a history of bringing in remarkable and legendary pianists to perform, and many are regulars, including Maurizio Pollini and others.
  • Touring Orchestras—Carnegie Hall has always been a regular stop for touring orchestras, moving throughout the country. They have been a staple of the hall ever since it opened.
  • Branching Out—Under the direction of others since Carnegie's death in 1925, the hall has hosted jazz, folk and all other kinds of music as well, providing diverse options to concert goers.
