5 Things to Know About Negotiations

At the past few board of education meetings, teachers have come out to speak about the negotiations between the board and the . And with the teachers expected to return to the meeting again Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Harmon V. Wade Administration Building, we present five facts to know about the negotiations thus far.

  • —The union has filed a grievance against the board of education concerning the decision to change the staff's health care coverage without bringing it forward for negotiating. The B-REA has said the change should not have been made outside of negotiations.
  • Three Facets—The negotiations have been focused on three main issues throughout the proceedings, namely salaries, worktime and health benefits.
  • —The board of education and the B-REA went into mediation in December, and had three sessions before determining that going into fact-finding was necessary. This process has begun, but could take up to three months before the next step begins.
  • June 2011—The contract officially expired in June 2011, and the two parties have been negotiating ever since. The two sides initially began negotiating in March 2011.
  • Low Morale—Teachers have spoken of low morale among all the schools, and the board of education has taken note of that as well.
