5 Things to Know About Roots & Shoots

On Thursday, is hosting a Roots & Shoots Dance for African Education Dance-A-Thon, with proceeds going to the Students Raising Students Scholarship Program in Kenya and Tanzania, Africa. Students at the school participate in the program with several fundraisers and other work throughout the year to raise money for the cause. So in honor of the fundraiser, we present five things to know about the Roots & Shoots program.

  • Jane Goodall—The Roots & Shoots program is done through the Jane Goodall Institute's International environmental and humanitarian program for all ages. Goodall established the institute to support research, as well as education, conservation and development programs.
  • For All Living Things—The purpose of the program is to foster respect and compassion for living things, and to inspire people to take action to help people and the environment.
  • Service Projects—Members of the program perform many service projects with the purpose of making a positive difference for people, animals and the environment.
  • Thousands of Members—The program has tens of thousands of members in more than 100 countries, and it focuses on local and global projects.
  • Projects Run Gamut—Projects include cleaning parks, helping at animal shelters, holding clothing drives, planting butterfly gardens and much more.
