Junior Girl Scout Troop 1150!

  • Names: Sophia Lopez, Claire Liston, Nicole Tobia, Bella Vignali, Melody Visconti, Cristina Lopez, Emma Levin, Becky Pollard, Abby Pollard, Allie Carter, Pooja Patel, Ariel Staffin, Lauren Arnold and Abby Johnson
  • Community Organization: Junior Girl Scout Troop 1150
  • Accomplishment: With the goal of providing service to their local school community to earn their Bronze Award, Bridgewater Junior Girl Scout Troop 1150 created and carried out a reading program for elementary school students.
  • Key to Awesomeness: For several weeks, the troop traveled after school to John F. Kennedy Primary School in Raritan. With the coordinating help of principal Joseph Walsh and first grade teacher Cathy Lopez, the girl scouts were paired up with students, ranging in age from kindergarten to fourth grade, to read books together and help the students improve their reading and comprehension skills. Troop 1150 girls chose their own books for the sessions and developed lesson plans, games and activities which related to the books that they read with the JFK students. The troop was successful with their Bronze Award reading project because they came up with the idea for the project on their own, as well as planned out the details from start to finish. They were dedicated to the project because it was their own creation. They enjoyed the project and looked forward to meeting with the elementary school students every session. The reading project was an activity that they had never done before as a troop, so it was something new and different for them. Furthermore, the scouts in Troop 1150 are all friends, so they enjoy working with each other. With all of the time and energy that Troop 1150 put into the reading project, the girls were determined to make it a success, and they achieved their goal!
  • Nominator: Jill Carter, Bridgewater parent
