Runners Shake Off Winter

More than 500 runners participate in the Second Annual Middle Earth Run From Winter 10K Race.

More than 500 people descended on Sunday to shake off the winter doldrums during the Second Annual Middle Earth Run From Winter 10K Race.

For many people, the race through the park is a chance to prepare for upcoming marathons and half-marathons.

"We are doing a half-marathon in May, and we need to get used to racing a little bit,” said Tracy Baitinger, of East Hanover, who ran the race with friends Christine Raffanello and Lisa Martire. “And it’s a flat course."

“I think it’s a great challenge,” added Raffanello, also of East Hanover.

For Tom Casola, of Hopatcong, the race took on a different meaning, as this was his second race after losing more than 200 pounds.

“It’s great just to be outside and able to run,” he said. “To be able to run six plus miles is exhilarating.”

And the overall winner of the race was PJ Meany, of Delaware.

All proceeds from the race go to Middle Earth, a non-profit agency that provides prevention, intervention and crisis services to adolescents.
