Church Will 'Ham' It Up at 4-H Fair

Dave Adams's famous baked ham sandwiches will make their fair debut.

A group of volunteers from Blessed Sacrament Church in Martinsville is preparing for its debut in the food tent at the Somerset County 4-H Fair

To qualify for a spot inside the fair’s most popular tent, vendors, all from non-profit groups, have to sell a unique item. That was easy for Sacred Heart.

Parishioner Dave Adams has been preparing baked ham sandwiches at the Knights of Columbus 5959’s quarterly blood drives for donors who want more than just a cookie.

That drew the attention of Grand Knight John Arcoleo, who said at the December 2012 meeting, “These sandwiches taste great Dave; we should do something with these.”

John, whose daughter is a 4-H member, read in the organization’s newsletter that a meeting was coming up to discuss preparations for the food tent at the fair.

John went to the meeting and encountered such a warm, friendly response  about the addition of a new food item, that the parish decided to participate in Somerset County’s most popular and free family-friendly event.

Parish groups working in the food tent include Knights of Columbus 5959; Blessed Sacrament Youth Group, Circle of Friends, a group of widows and widowers, and the Council of Catholic Women. Proceeds from the food tent will benefit the Blessed Sacrament Youth Group.

The Somerset County 4-H Fair will be held 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at North Branch Park on Milltown Road.
