Irene Flooding Can't Stop Legion From Honoring Veterans

Ceremony remembers those who fought and are currently fighting for our country.

Members of American Legion Post 327 in Bradley Gardens lowered the flag to half mast at 11 a.m. Thursday to honor and remember American veterans of all wars.

The ceremony, which takes place at the same time each year, is timed to recognize and celebrate the end of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 [the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month].

This year’s gathering at the Legion was especially meaningful to the members because the Post building on Old York Road was flooded as a result of Hurricane Irene. The basement of the building—which contained the recreation room, offices and all major equipment including furnace, water heater, refrigerators and a recently donated flat screen TV—saw everything lost as water rose up to the ceiling. Mold now grows on the walls and the building will need to be completely gutted.

“The post got hit hard with the flooding,” said Lisa Hanlon, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. “It’s important for our veterans to get the post back for them, but there are a lot of repairs to do”.

Legion 327 has 79 members and still has a couple members from World War II.
