Raritan Valley Symphonic Band to Play Broadway

The band is continuing its 30th anniversary celebration.

The Raritan Valley Symphonic Band is continuing its 30th anniversary year with its annual pops concert, to be held June 7 at the Bridgewater-Raritan High School.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m.

The band will highlight the concert with two of the best known works in Broadway musicals, according to a release. They are “Porgy and Bess” by George Gershwin and “The Sound of Music” by Richard Rodgers.

In addition, the band will cap its show with performances of “The Syncopated Clock,” “Pavanne” and “MetaMarch,” among others. The last was commissioned by the band when it celebrated its 20th anniversary season 10 years ago.

Throughout its 30th anniversary season, the band has featured many of its soloists in performances, and received proclamations from Gov. Chris Christie, Hillsbrough Township, Somerville Borough, Raritan Borough and the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

The band was created in 1984, and it currently has more than 100 members from central New Jersey and the surrounding communities.

The concert, according to the release, is being funded partially by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State. The band itself is sponsored by the Jointure for Community Adults Education, as well as contributions from local businesses, corporations and private citizens.
