The B-Street Band Takes a Backseat to Mother Nature

The much anticipated B-Street Band performance was cancelled Sunday due to rain.

There was no tunnel of love or sunlight from Mother Nature Sunday at Duke Island Park, when a concert featuring the B-Street Band, a six-piece Bruce Springsteen tribute and party band, was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The B-Street Band, anticipated to be one of the top three performances lined up for the Somerset County Park Commission's summer concert series, was the second show to be cancelled due to rain, after Tony Trischka's performance on Aug. 1.

Karren Newman, recreation manager for the Somerset County Park Commission, estimated that between 1,000 and 1,500 people attend each concert.

"This summer, the Boys in Concert show on July 18 featuring members from the original cast of the Broadway hit 'Jersey Boys' was our biggest attendance to date," she said.

Newman said Monday that she had expected a very large crowd for the B-Street Band performance, and was looking forward to the concert herself.

Unfortunately, Newman said, due to the band's busy schedule, it is unlikely that the performance will be rescheduled this summer, but there is discussion about incorporating the group into next year's lineup of concerts.

The performance schedule is determined and locked in by the end of January each year, Newman said.

The B-Street Band was formed in Asbury Park in the 1980s by Will Forte, who continues to play in the band.

The B-Street Band has been performing for more than 30 years, and has not only opened for Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, but has also performed at inauguration parties for former New Jersey Gov. Christie Whitman and President Barack Obama, as well as at the Super Bowl and ProBowl, and countless other private, public and commercial venues across the east coast.

In addition to Springsteen's music, the B-Street Band also performs Motown, classic rock and music of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. The band's next performance in New Jersey will be a free show at the Trump Marina in Atlantic City Aug. 19.

The Somerset County Park Commission's summer concert series, is held every Sunday during the summer at Duke Island Park. It will continue next week with Junior Walker's All Stars, and end on Aug. 29 with the Jumpers Orchestra.
