Three-Day Holiday Weekend Brings Fun Around the County

Several special events are being held in the area in celebration of Labor Day and the official end of the summer season.

Summer is winding down, and schools are opening all over the state. But first, we can celebrate the final official weekend of the season with the three-day Labor Day holiday, and some events around the area for families and friends (And all these event can be found on the Patch calendar).

 

Saturday, Sept. 4

—The 28th annual Lead East will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Parsippany, through Sunday. Called the "World's Biggest '50s Party," the event is a celebration of the music and cars of the 1950s, and includes such activities as sock hops, drive-in movies, swing dancing and prom night. Events begin each day around 8 a.m., and also include a 50s collectibles show, a cappella group performances and the competition Doo Wop Idol. Ticket prices vary based on day and ages of guests, but information can be found at the website leadeast.net.

—Duke Farms, on Route 206 in Hillsborough, will be hosting a twilight bike tour from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., to allow guests to see the native meadows, woodlands, lakes and everything else the farm has to offer. The tour follows the same route as the farm's scenic bike tour, but this one is happening toward the evening rather than in the middle of the afternoon. The tour is $10 per person, and $5 for children in bike seats or trailers. Advance registration for the event is required, and can be completed at dukefarms.org.

—The Bernards Township Democratic Committee is hosting a Movie in the Park on Somerville Road in Basking Ridge, as it screens the classic, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." The committee will be offering free popcorn, hot dogs and beverages, beginning at 6:30 p.m., before the movie begins at 7:30 p.m. In addition to the screening of the film itself, the committee will host a general discussion afterward, and guests are invited to bring chairs or blankets to sit on during the evening.

 

Sunday, Sept. 5

—The Dawn Patrol M.C. Clubhouse, on Roberts Street, will be hosting its biannual Labor Day Weekend Fun Run for a 50-mile motorcycle ride that will begin at the Bradley Gardens Volunteer Fire Company on Old York Road, and end at the clubhouse. The event includes a picnic after the ride, and bikers can take the trail—which will have already been laid out—at their own pace throughout the morning. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the cost is $15, including the picnic and games afterward.

—Grape Expectations, on Kearney Street, is holding its second winery open house, with guests invited to sample several different kinds of pre-made wines. The wines have been made by both professional winemakers with the business, as well as customers themselves. The event is free, and lasts from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Monday, Sept. 6

—The Somerset Patriots will be holding its annual 5K run to benefit the Somerset Patriots Children's Educational & Sportsmanship Foundation. The run is held every year to raise money for the foundation. The race itself includes a loop around the entire property of TD Bank Ballpark, as well as one lap around the warning track inside the stadium. The race will conclude with an awards ceremony, with prizes given to winners in the race. The winners will also be recognized at the evening's ball game.

—The Somerset Patriots will host its second to last evening fireworks of the season, with a show following the actual ball game. The game that evening is against York Revolution, and is presented by Cablevision Advertising Sales. The game also includes Guaranteed Win Night, as well as $1 hot dogs for guests.
