Martinsville CPA Helps Small Businesses Add Up

Gail Rosen enjoys working with budding entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Some people think working as an accountant must be pretty boring, but working with a wide range of entrepreneurial small business owners is anything but mundane for certified public accountant Gail Rosen, a 20-year resident of Martinsville, who established her own business in 1983.

Rosen said what she loves most about what she does is working with a great variety of creative and innovative people.

“My clients are entrepreneurs and really interesting people," she said. "They are really good at what they do but often, they really need help with accounting and taxes."

Rosen also teaches small business accounting through the State of New Jersey’s SEA Program which provides training for unemployed workers who would like to launch their own businesses.

Rosen believes this is a great time for people to start their own businesses. She said, with the uncertainty of the economy, it’s better to develop a business that allows you to rely on many sources instead of just one.

“People with small businesses have an advantage, because we work with low overhead we can provide great service at a reasonable price,” said Rosen.

“A lot of small businesses are doing very well in this economy because they can be flexible and react quickly," she said. "I see the small business market on the upswing."

Some of the greatest challenges to the small business owner are generally tax and accounting issues and keeping up with technology, Rosen said.

Rosen said it’s also critical that small businesses start off on the right foot.

“Make sure you take time to legally form the correct type of entity for your needs," she said. "Should you be an LLC, sole proprietor, partnership, S corp or C Corp? Each has their advantages and disadvantages."

While many of the forms can be accessed online, Rosen said she believes it’s important to have professional guidance.

“Life is much easier when you do it right the first time,” she said.

Rosen advises her clients and students to consider important questions like what types of books they should keep She said it’s important to establish good record-keeping habits to comply with tax obligations and deductions.

Rosen said her business is healthy and humming along. and she loves living and working in the Bridgewater area.

“This is a great community with a lot going on," she said. "There are so many great restaurants and it’s great for families. And I love doing business here.”
