New Yogurt Shop is 'Nightclub for Kids'

This week, Bridgewater has experienced a heat wave—and one new business is ready to keep residents just a little cooler.

Cups is celebrating its grand opening this weekend, opening for the first time at 11 a.m. Friday in the Village at Commons on Commons Way.

"We feel our concept fits Bridgewater, with its fun and upbeat concept," said Andy Race, director of operations for Cups.

The business is all about frozen yogurt, allowing for self serve of many different flavors, followed by the chance to take advantage of the toppings bar with fruits, chocolate and other goodies. The cup is then weighed and payment is made based on that.

Cups, Race said, has music blaring, fun service, comfortable couches and more to keep people of all ages inside.

"There is more room to hang out here, and lots of people milling around," he said. "All self-service is fun."

After a VIP night Thursday, the business is holding its grand opening Friday, with specials being offered all weekend and beyond.

Race said the business will be handing out scratch-off tickets, starting Friday, to win free prizes. One prize will be free yogurt for a year, while others include beach towels, water bottles and lip balm, and many will receive $1 off yogurt.

"These will be handed out through the weekend and more," he said.

The business, which initially opened in 2010 in Clifton, has seven New Jersey locations, with two more planned and three planned in New York.

Lou Meyer, vice president of the company, said the business was initially designed for 12- to 49-year-old women with its images of Twiggy, Marilyn Monroe and the Beach Boys.

"The sounds of it was very teeny bopper," he said. "It almost started with surfing, and now it's oldies and goodies."

Meyer said there is a club-like atmosphere, but it is all about frozen yogurt and having a good time.

"It is a nightclub for kids," he said. "We want them to have fun and hang around."
