Ryan Guth has been teaching music at Marlboro Memorial Middle School for seven years. By 2009, Guth noticed that his students were leaving middle school to enter a regional public school district that didn't offer competitive musical programs, despite the high demand.
"Music is definitely a priority at Marlboro Memorial," Guth said. "But my students were getting split up in high school."

Guth began VoiceWorks in 2009, teaching students in competitive groups and giving private lessons in Marlboro's Old Brick Reformed Church. As the demand grew, so did Guth's classes. This year, he moved his company to a studio on Tennent Road in Morganville.
"These kids need have a release somewhere, get creative. They need to use their brains differently."
VoiceWorks fosters two competitive groups. Pitch Black is a women's vocal jazz group and Impulse is a bell choir inspired by the award winning bell choir conducted by Guth at Memorial Middle School.
Guth and his staff offer a touring musical theatre ensemble as well as private voice and acting lessons. The company offers a summer camp with a performance at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick.
VoiceWorks students go on to perform in New Brunswick in professional theater, after playhouse owners saw talent in summer performances.
And students of the local theater company are no strangers to winning awards. VoiceWorks competitive ensembles have bested other schools in the tri-state area several times, with a nice display of trophies to prove it.
"Our approach is a lot different," Guth said. "It is a requirement that all of our faculty are currently performing. They need to stay current with industry trends for our students."
But Guth said there are some things VoiceWorks does not tolerate: divas and stage moms.
"We will humble you real quick. We treat our kids professionally, and they grow to be a really nice family."
