Bridgewater Surgeon Promoted to Secretary of Medical Center

A Bernardsville surgeon has been chosen to serve as president of the Somerset Medical Center’s medical and dental staff, numbering 700 people.

William Sugarmann, a general surgeon who specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgery, was chosen for the honor, according to a release from the Somerset Medical Center.

Sugarmann earned his medical degree at the University of Connecticut and completed his residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He is currently serving as a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, served as president of the Somerset County Medical Society, is a former board member of the Medical Society of New Jersey, is a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

In addition, the release said, he previously served as chief of surgery at Somerset Medical Center.

Also, according to the release, Cory Vergilio, a gastroenterologist from Watchung, will serve as vice president of the Somerset Medical Center.

Vergilio is certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine, and has served as clinical professor of internal medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry-New Jersey Medical School. In addition, the release said, he graduated from the same university, and completed his internal medicine training at University Hospital in Newark.

Finally, Bridgewater resident Thangamani Seenivasan, an oncologic surgeon, will serve as secretary and treasurer at the medical center, the release said.

Seenivasan, the release said, is board certified in surgery with specialties in general surgery and cancer surgery. He earned his medical degree at Stanley Medical College in Madras University, in India, and completed medical residencies at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn and the University of Pittsburgh.

In addition, the release said, Seenivasan is a member of the breast and colorectal cancer multi-disciplinary teams at the Steeplechase Cancer Center.

The terms for all three doctors will last for two years, and began Jan. 1.
