UPDATE: Newark Woman Critically Injured in Crash

Driver loses control of vehicle on I-287, collides with tree.

A Newark woman was critically injured early Sunday morning when she lost control of her vehicle on Interstate 287 in Bridgewater and struck a tree, State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones said.

State Police had earlier reported the crash was fatal.

According to State Police, Freda Osei, 29, was traveling northbound on I-287 when she lost control of her 2001 Nissan Pathfinder and struck a tree with the left side of her vehicle at about 5:50 a.m.

Bound Brook EMS transported Osei to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she is listed in critical condition, State Police said. No other people were involved in the crash, police said.

The investigation into the crash caused two lanes of I-287 to be closed for more than three hours, finally re-opening shortly before 9:30 a.m.
