Turn Our Power Off After Transformer Fire, Resident Says

It burst into flames Friday after JCP&L turned the power back on to that line.

One family is hoping to get some kind of reassurance from JCP&L that their power lines are turned off—particularly after a transformer burst into flames Friday afternoon.

For Spring Valley Drive resident Sara DiGrazia Bucek, she saw a tree fall and snap a pole, bringing down a transformer into a puddle during the storm Monday. At that time, she said, her power went off, and she assumed that the electricity to the lines was gone.

The downed lines, Bucek said, were right in front of several houses on Spring Valley Drive, which ends in a dead end, and many residents actually had to drive over them to leave their homes.

But on Friday, Bucek said, power was restored to a nearby area, and the transformer started a fire.

“When we lost power, we thought it was off,” she said. “But power was restored to another area, and the transformer burst into flames today.”

“I want reassurance that since the power was turned on, they could let us know when it was turned off,” she added.

But, Bucek said, she has not heard any word yet.

“Since no one came to assess the area, I don’t think they knew the problem was here,” she said.

And, Bucek said, she is frustrated by the situation, and wants some reassurance. For right now, there is yellow tape at the start of the road, cutting off the area from the rest of the street.

JCP&L representative Ron Morano said Friday that he would look into the situation on Spring Valley Drive.

“My concern is that JCP&L needs to reassure us that the lines are turned off,” she said. “And we have big yellow tape that blocks us off, which makes it harder.”
