Kids Spend Day Off in the Snow

Here's a look at everything you need to know about the storm.

Snow is blowing, and the National Weather Service is predicting the possibility of a few more snow showers through Wednesday. Bridgewater Patch will provide updates throughout the "snow day" about everything you need to know.

  • No School Means Snowy Fun: Children around the township spent some of the day off from school playing in the snow as they slid down hills on their snowboards. Check out of several kids who, after spending time playing Wii at home, decided to spend an afternoon on their snowboards at the hill at the North Branch Greenway Park.
  • Library Had Delayed Opening: Although it was planned Tuesday that the Bridgewater Township Library would not be open Wednesday, it instead only saw a delayed opening. The library is open Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Sports Postponed: With the canceling of school for today, several sports events have been postponed, namely a junior varsity wrestling match against Montgomery and a varsity wrestling match against Montgomery. A student council volleyball tournament scheduled for today has also been postponed.
  • Residents Shoveling Away: Residents are shoveling their driveways and digging out their cars, as plows continue to make their ways through town. Check out our of how Bridgewater is faring, and be sure to send in your own!
  • Roads Cleared, Practice Caution: Officials are reporting that the roads are mostly cleared, but are as temperatures continue to drop throughout the day. Bridgewater saw about eight inches of snow, and township administrator Robert Bogart said the DPW was out well in advance plowing and salting in preparation for the storm. Bogart said the township fared better than had been expected.
  • Call Ahead Before You Shop: Although the will be open for business during its regular hours today, police are reporting that several private businesses and doctors offices are either closed or delayed for two hours or until noon. Police recommend calling ahead to any non-major corporations before venturing out in the snow.
  • School's Out: The Bridgewater-Raritan School District and the Somerset County Vocational Technical High School will be closed Wednesday.
  • Township offices, mall open: The municipal complex will be open for its regular hours today, as will the Bridgewater Commons Mall, with its hours being 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Senior Centers Closed, Meals on Wheels Cancelled: The Senior Wellness Center in Bernards, as well as the senior centers in Hillsborough, Raritan, Quail Brook, Warrenbrook, Manville and Montgomery will be closed Wednesday. There will also be no Meals on Wheels deliveries and the Office of Aging and Disability Services will be closed to walk-ins.
  • Township Has Worked to be Ready: The Department of Public Works has been working since Tuesday for the storm, with township administrator Robert Bogart saying there is the potential for 40 vehicles to be out on the roads spreading salt and plowing snow.
  • State Offices To Have Delayed Opening: Gov. Chris Christie announced Tuesday night that all state offices will open two hours late Wednesday.
  • Some Municipal Operations Are Closed: Bridgewater municipal court and the senior center are all closed Wednesday.
  • NJ Transit is Cross-Honoring: NJ Transit has put system-wide cross-honoring in effect. It began at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and continues all day Wednesday. Customers can use their tickets for alternate travel modes—rail, bus or light rail.
  • Track is Postponed: The Wayne Valentine Invitational that the Bridgewater-Raritan boys and girls track teams were supposed to participate in on Wednesday at Madison's Drew University has been postponed, with a makeup date to be determined.
  • Be Safe on the Roads: If you have to be on the roads in the snow, the Division of Highway Traffic and Safety encourages the following steps: Tune up and winterize their vehicles, as well as check the radiator, battery, antifreeze, and all other fluid levels. Check tire treads and replace them if they're unsafe. Check and replace windshield wiper blades if the rubber is cracked and/or brittle, and be sure to check and refill the washer fluid reservoir. Maintain at least a half a tank of gas during the winter to prevent the fuel line from freezing.
