Ernest Palchanes Sr. Served in Navy During World War II

Longtime builder and carpenter enjoyed outdoor activities.

Ernest V. Palchanes Sr., 89, died Nov. 3. 

He was born in Ashley, Pa., and lived in Elizabeth before moving to Bridgewater in 1957.

He was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII, serving on the warship LST 171 in the Pacific Fleet, landing on Philippines, Guam, and surrounding islands as a gunners mate Third Class CPO earning seven stars.

After the war, he worked as a talented, self-employed carpenter and builder for 50 years, before retiring in 1989. 

Palchanes was a communicant of the Blessed Sacrament RC Church, and a member of the AMVets and the LST organization.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening, and also reading and watching programs about World War II history along with fishing and hunting on TV. 

He is predeceased by his siblings, Tony, Edmund, Robert, Tommy, Dolores and Dorothy. 

Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, Xaviera, his sons Ernest Jr. and his wife Patricia, Vincent and his wife Nadine and Mark and is wife Tammie, and four grandchildren, Erica, Kaitlin, Sarah and Nicholas.

Services were held Thursday at Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, followed by Interment at St. Bernard Cemetery in Bridgewater. 

Donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Blessed Sacrament RC Church, Martinsville.
