World War II Veteran Harold K. Schoonover Sr., 89, Worked at VA Hospitals

Services set for Tuesday, with visitation on Monday.

Harold K. Schoonover Sr., 89, died Dec. 19. 

Harold was born and raised in Painted Post, N.Y., before moving to Martinsville in 1963. He received a bachelor's degree at William and Mary College, in Virginia, in 1953.

He was a US Army veteran serving during World War II having fought in the Battle of the Bulge and at Normandy.

Harold was a physical therapist at several VA Hospitals for over 40 years before retiring from the state in 1988.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Somerville and the VFW of Martinsville. Harold volunteered for Visiting Nurses Association as an advocate for nursing homes.

In his spare time Harold also enjoyed fishing and gardening. 

He is predeceased by his daughter-in-law Elaine, who died in 2009.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Marjorie, son Kenneth, daughter Jennifer Amos and her husband Loren, brother Alvin and grandchildren Jeffery, Tara, Ken, Carleen, and great grandson Andrew.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave., Somerville. Interment will be at Washington's Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, Pa.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
