Question: Do You Agree With Morris School District Delayed Opening?

There was some ice, but no snow the morning of Jan. 17.

We were caught off guard here at Morristown Patch Tuesday morning. And, no, it's not because of the minor ice storm that came through the evening before.

The Morris School District called for a delayed opening on Jan. 17. So, hopefully, the kids got an extra hour or so of sleep, and perhaps some parents did, too, if you're lucky. But, with temperatures quickly rising into the 40s, pretty much anything resembling anything worthy of a delayed opening had been reduced to water and slush by the time class was in session.

Which brings us to our "Question of the Day:" Should the Morris School District called for the delayed opening on Tuesday? Is it a matter of never being too careful when it comes to the kids? Did ghosts of play any role? Was it unnecessary? Chime in below.

I think the delayed opening was a mistake...the weather was perfectly fine...the Morris school district seems a little too eager to call for delayed openings... Not only does this disrupt and shorten the school day, it represents a serious inconvenience to working parents

The issue is safety. Driving on ice is difficult in a car. Try driving a bus full of children up and down some of the hills in the Morristown area. Just like a fire truck or anything else big. It looks easy, but when you can't stop, all bets are off. The real issue is why they have so many days off. Around the holidays , before and after , there seems to be so many days off. In the real working world that many days off are few and far between. In other countries they don't get so much time off. Could be one reasons we are losing ground in math and science.

When I was a kid school was rarely closed.....and everyone survived! It was a miracle apparently. I drove to work that morning..at 7am....no problem.

I as well went to work at 7:15 and there was not a speck of ice to be found. The days off is extreme. Please tell me why schools are closed the whole week before Easter and then the Monday after - really ???

It was a great call. Do not forget there are walkers. My children walk almost 1.5 miles to Morristown HS . This is fine on a most days. When it snows, sidewalks do not have to be cleared/salted until 24 hours after the storm ends. My children have to leave the house at 7AM. The roads were clear but the sidewalks were sheets of ice. By 9, the sun was up and it was a bit less treacherous. It is a serious safety issue for children who walk.
