UPDATE: Police ID Man, 67, Seriously Hurt in Accident

Police say vehicle veered off Route 28 and struck a tree late Saturday night.

A 67-year-old Bridgewater man was seriously injured when his vehicle veered off Union Avenue (Route 28) near Monroe Street and struck a tree late Saturday night, Bridgewater Police said Sunday.

According to Bridgewater police officer Robert Stasiulaitis, the driver was the only person involved in the one-car accident that occurred Saturday night at about 11:45 p.m. 

Police identified the driver late Sunday afternoon as Douglas P. Haberstroh, but the extent of his injuries have not yet been released.

Stasiulaitis said the man was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Somerset Medical Center and Somerville rescue squad before being transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

“I don’t know the extent of the injuries, only to say that they are serious,” Stasiulaitis said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
