Teen Burglary Suspect in Critical Condition

Two Bridgewater teenagers were officially charged Wednesday with burglary, following an incident Saturday that has left one of them in critical condition at a local hospital, according to Acting Somerset County Prosecutor Peter DeMarco.

Douglas Uhler, 18, of Vanderveer Road, and Brian Johnston, 18, of Chestnut Street, were officially charged on complaints of burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and theft, DeMarco said.

According to DeMarco, the Bridgewater Township Police Department received a 911 call at 3:39 a.m. Saturday about a fight on Oak Street. When police arrived, he said, they found Johnston and Uhler lying in the roadway, and the victims—a 42-year-old male and a 38-year-old female—reported that they had found the two teenagers breaking into their vehicle.

The male victim, DeMarco said, had chased the two teenagers onto Linden Street, where he got into a fight with both of them.

Johnston, DeMarco said, was found to have items he had taken from the car, but Uhler was unconscious, so officers began performing CPR, before the Somerset Medical Center's Mobile Intensive Care Unit and the Bradley Gardens Rescue Squad transported him to a local hospital.

As of Thursday, DeMarco said, Uhler is in critical condition.

Johnston was processed and released on his own recognizance from the Bridgewater Township Police Department, DeMarco said.

DeMarco said the investigation is still open at this time, and is expected to be presented to a grand jury for any additional charges that may be filed on any of those involved in the incident.

The Bridgewater Township Police Department declined to comment on the incident because it is being handled by the prosecutor's office.
