Car Catches Fire in Mall Parking Deck

No one was injured and the fire is not suspicious, police said.

Traffic was a little delayed on the ramp in the parking deck at the Bridgewater Commons Mall after a car became fully engulfed in flames around 5:03 p.m Sunday.

According to Bridgewater Township Police Lt. Luke Daley, the incident was not suspicious and no one was injured in the fire.

"We think there were problems with the car constantly overheating before," he said. "It just caught fire, but wasn't witnessed."

Daley said it was a 2000 Chevy Impala, and the fire started in the engine compartment then spread from one area of the vehicle to another.

The vehicle, Daley said, was on the ramp going from the first to second floor of the parking deck.

"But everything was still operating as usual," he said. "It may have disrupted things as far as going up and down the ramp."

Although no one was hurt, the vehicle was completely totaled, Daley said, and is still in the deck while the owner works on having it towed.

Responding to the scene were the Bridgewater Township Police Department, Martinsville Rescue Squad, North Branch Fire Company, Country Hills Fire Company and Green Knoll Fire Company.

Daley said the investigation has been wrapped up.

"It was a car fire, nothing suspicious, it just happened," he said. "No one was injured and the mall conducted business as usual."
