Eight Teens Arrested After Large Fight at Alternative School

Police are investigating the cause of the incident.

At least eight teens were taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after a physical brawl broke out at the Somerset County Alternative School on Finderne Avenue, police said.

Bridgewater Township Police Chief Richard Borden said there were no weapons involved and one student refused medical treatment for a laceration.

But eight students—ages 16 to 18—were taken to police headquarters, Borden said, for an investigation into the cause of the large fight that broke out at the school around noon.

"We don't know if they will all be under arrest," he said.

Borden said the incident occurred in the center lobby, and the officer who is hired by the school for security contacted the police department for assistance.

"The school employs an officer, and he called us about the large fight," he said. "He was upstairs at the time, and it turned out to be bigger than he thought when he got there."

Borden said there have been some incidents of disorderly conduct at the school in the past, so there is an officer stationed there.

"But they pay for it," he said. "It's a proactive measure."

Borden said the department will continue the investigation as to what actually happened. The department will also be checking the security cameras from the school.

"The investigation begins and there were no weapons involved that we know of," he said.
