UPDATE: Fuel Tanks Ruptured in Dump Truck Crash

Fuel was running rapidly toward a storm sewer grate on Route 22 West after a dump truck overturned around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, according to North Branch Fire Co. Chief David Hickson.

According to Hickson, the accident involving a large dump truck backed up traffic for hours during rush hour on the highway.

Hickson said that the North Branch Volunteer Fire Co. and Green Knoll Volunteer Fire Co. were dispatched to Route 22 West near Route 202/206 for a motor vehicle accident with injuries.

"A large dump truck was found on the Jersey Barrier with an active fuel leak," he said. "The truck, which left the roadway, had 125 gallons of fuel in its saddle tanks."

The tanks ruptured from underneath in the accident, Hickson said, and fuel began to run toward a storm sewer grate on the road.

"Firefighters were able to create a dam using sand from the roadway until Green Knoll's specialized rescue truck arrived with Speedy Dry to complete the containment process," he said.

Hickson said that one person was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained in the accident, and units stayed on the scene for clean-up for about 90 minutes.

Bridgewater Township Police Department is continuing to investigate the accident.

Units on scene during the clean-up were the Green Knoll Volunteer Fire Company, North Branch Fire Company, Bridgewater Township Police, Martinsville Rescue Squad and the Somerset County HazMat.
