Man Charged With Breaking Into Finderne Pharmacy

A Somerville man was arrested 90 minutes after the burglary.

A Somerville man was charged Saturday with burglarizing a pharmacy in the Finderne section of the township and stealing cigarettes.

Michael Guggenheim, 27, of North Gaston Avenue in Somerville, has been charged with burglary, theft and fleeing from police.

At about 5:06 a.m. Saturday, Patrolman Douglas Thorsen responded to a report of a burglary alarm activation at the E-Z Pharmacy, on East Main St., according to an affidavit of probable cause filed Monday in Superior Court.

When Thorsen arrived at the store, he saw a man, later identified as Guggenheim, leaving through the front door, according to the affidavit.

Guggenheim then ran from the area, and several other police officers were called to look for him, the affidavit said.

Inside the store, Thorsen found 14 packs of Newport cigarettes and 49 instant lottery tickets on the floor, according to the affidavit.

Near the store, another officer found a backpack that contained Guggenheim’s passport. Thorsen identified the picture in the passport as the man he had seen leaving the store, the affidavit said.

At about 6:48 a.m., the other police officer saw Guggenheim walking on the south side of East Main Street. When Guggenheim was arrested and searched, police found three packs of Newport cigarettes in his shorts, the affidavit said.
