Man Charged With DWI After Smoking Marijuana Before Getting in Car

The following arrest information was supplied by the Bridgewater Township Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

The Bridgewater Township Police Department made several arrests this week for theft, and drug and alcohol charges.

Brett Natale, 21, of High Bridge, was charged with driving while intoxicated after he was pulled over on Promenade Boulevard with a non-functioning brake lamp at 12:01 a.m. June 23. Although an alcotest showed his blood alcohol level to be at 0.00, officers said they smelled burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Bridgewater Township Police Lt. Al Nicaretta said Natale admitted to smoking marijuana an hour before the officer stopped him.

Aside from the driving while intoxicated charge, Natale was charged with not maintaining lamps and careless driving.

Francisco Melendez, 23, of Somerville, was charged with driving while intoxicated and refusal to submit to breath tests after he was pulled over for driving on two flat passenger side tires on Grove Street at 2:05 a.m. June 24.

This article is incorrect. The case was dismissed by the Bridgewater Prosecutor's office because there was no evidence the man was actually intoxicated by marijuana. If you ask me it was an overzealous cop who saw a young kid driving at night and decided he was going to pull him over and arrest him for anything he could think of that night. Its unfortunate that the taxpayers had to pay the bill on this when they should have never even charged him with anything in the first place. Taxpayers of Bridgewater...you need to call on your elected politicians for reform. Is it really necessary to have such a massive police force for a town thats crime rate is so low? Shouldn't that money be used for other things such as roads, parks and schools?
