Police Investigating Three Burglaries of Unlocked Vehicles.

The burglaries all occurred in the same area of town.

A span of a few blocks are the sites of three recent burglaries near the Darby Tract in Bridgewater where unlocked vehicles were rummaged through during the evening hours of May 25 and May 26.

According to Bridgewater Township Police Lt. Al Nicaretta, the incidents occurred in unlocked vehicles, but the police have not determined whether the crimes were committed by the same person.

"The MOs with regard to the individual incidents are the same with rummaging through the vehicles looking for valuables," he said. "But we haven't determined if it was the same person [in all three]."

The first incident was reported on May 25 when a Cabot Hill resident reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle and ransacked the interior. Police said nothing was stolen from this vehicle.

On May 26, a Barrington Drive resident reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle in the overnight hours, but nothing was stolen then either.

Also on May 26, a Sudbury Lane resident reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle overnight and stole a GPS unit.

Nicaretta said the police department always warns residents to lock their vehicles and make sure valuable possessions are not in plain sight.

"[It's important to] lock your car door or lock valuables in the trunk or glove compartment," he said. "They should be placed out of plain sight."

Usually, Nicaretta said, someone looking to steal from a vehicle will search for one that is unlocked because that will not attract attention. Rarely, he said, do police investigate a vehicle burglary and find a broken window or other damage.

"They don't want to set off the alarms," he said.

In addition, Nicaretta said, GPS units are the most common items stolen because people leave them attached to the windshield where they are in full view.

"If you leave them out, they are easy to see," he said.
