Student's Disruption of Planned Attack Earns Police Award

Department recognizes Sara Semple during ceremony promoting officers.

When Sara Semple learned of a plan in December 2009 by some fellow Bridgewater-Raritan High School students to kill the school's resource officer, and attack teachers and other students with knives and machetes, she didn't hesitate to tell school officials about the plan.

Her actions uncovered what Bridgewater police called a “Columbine” style attack, which was prevented—and earned her the department's "Civilian Award, first degree." Semple received a certificate, as well as expressions of appreciation from Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano at a special event Wednesday at the Bridgewater Municipal Courtroom.

"Ms. Semple is to be commended for decision to share sensitive information without fear of reprisal or judgment by her peers," the certificate presented to her noted.

Wednesday's event also included several promotions for the Bridgewater department, including the elevation of John Mitzak to sergeant, Gregory Duane to lieutenant, and Alfred Nicaretta to captain.

The department also saluted retired Capt. Eric Goleskie at the event.
