Search Continues For Missing Long Hill Twp. Man

David Bird of Millington has been missing since Saturday afternoon.

The search continued on Monday afternoon for a missing Long Hill Township man, David Byrd, with rescue workers, police and a New Jersey State Police helicopter combing the area near a railroad bridge on Pond Hill Road in Bernards Township, near the Long Hill border.

At that scene at about 4 p.m., Long Hill Patrol Officer Matt Newschwander said police were exhausting every resource, but had no idea where Bird, mssing since Saturday, might be located.

"We have nothing at this point to go in a good direction," Newschwander said.

The Long Hill police department had a running update on Bird's disappearance on the department's Facebook page, including a desciption.

He is described as 55, 6 foot, 1 inch tall, and was wearing a red jacket, blue jeans, sneakers and glasses when he reportedly left his home in the Millington section at 4 p.m. on Saturday to take a walk. The description said he often walks the Hicks Tract in Millington. 

The description also said that Bird had undergone a liver transplant, and his medication was overdue.

The Long Hill Township Police Department is investigating the missing person reports, and asks that anyone has any information please contact the Incident Command Post at 908-647-1800, option 1, extension 236 until further information is posted.

A member of the Long Hill rescue squad said the search on Pond Hill Road had started at about 2 p.m. on Monday.

He and Newschwander said that rescue workers and searches from multiple municipalities, including Boonton, Parsippany, Jefferson and Pequannock, had showed up to assist in the search at that location.

Bernards Township Police Capt. Ed Byrnes said that township's police are assisting in searching border areas.
