Seven Hurt as Van Careens into Bridgewater Home

Hillsborough landscape company vehicle crashes exiting from Route 22.

A van owned by a Hillsborough landscaping company crashed into a Bridgewater home early Thursday morning, injuring seven of eight occupants of the vehicle, police said.

Leopoldo Zavala, 45, of Plainfield, and six passengers in the van he was driving were hospitalized after the vehicle crashed into the porch of a house on Garretson Road at 6:37 a.m., said.

Police said the accident occurred when Zavala lost control of the 1994 Ford van owned by Landscape Maintenance Services in Hillsborough while exiting Route 22 onto Garrettson Road.

No one was home at the time of the crash, police said.

Zavala was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, in New Brunswick, with injuries to his legs. Six passengers in the van were transported to Somerset Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Police said one passenger was not injured.

Rescue squads from Green Knoll, Martinsville, Somerville and Whitehouse responded to the incident, as well as the Somerset Mobile Intensive Care Unit.

Police said the incident is still under investigation and the cause has not yet been determined. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Robert Stasiulaitis at 908-722-4111, ext. 5159.
