Report: Engineer Sounded Horn Before Train Hit Police Car

Report says car was not on rails at time of collision.

The engineer of the non-passenger NJ Transit train hit the train's emergency brakes and sounded the train's horn before it collided with a Bridgewater police car, sending the officer driving it to the hospital, Thursday, according to a report on NJ.com.

The incident occurred just before noon as the officer was investigating reports of trespassers on the rail lines, according to NJ Transit. NJ.com reported the officer was on the right-of-way for the railroad rails, but not on the rails.

The officer was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center for treatment of injuries and was released early Thursday evening.
