Update: Bound Brook Man Killed By NJ Transit Train in Bridgewater

Accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Saturday

New Jersey Transit Police are investigating the death of a 40-year-old male who was struck and killed by a Raritan-bound New Jersey Transit train around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The man was identified as John Kardos, a 47-year-old Bound Brook resident, though the medical examiner has not determined an official cause of death, according to NJ Transit Spokesman Dan Stessel.

"I can tell you that this individual stepped on to the track, and made no apparent effort to get out of the way of the train," Stessel said. "The investigation remains open until we have autopsy results."

Stessel did not say when the autopsy would be completed.

The train struck Kardos east of the Bridgewater New Jersey Transit station, near where the tracks pass under Route 287, according to Stessel. Officials are calling the death a trespasser fatality, since it did not occur at a train station or at a designated pedestrian crossing, he said.

"There was no reason for this person to be on the tracks," Stessel said.

Local law enforcement and emergency personnel, including the Bridgewater Police Department and the Rescue Squad, reported to the scene, though New Jersey Transit Police will handle the investigation into the death.

New Jersey Transit suspended service on the Raritan Valley Line where the accident occurred, between the Raritan and Bound Brook stations for about an hour and a half, Stessel said. New Jersey Transit expected to open at least one of the tracks in the evening, and service resumed around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

During the three hours after the accident, Stessel said, New Jersey Transit provided buses between the affected stations.
