UPDATE: Man, 37, Critically Hurt in Route 22 Crash

Victim injured when N.Y. teen loses control of vehicle, crosses median into oncoming traffic.

Editor's Note: As of Monday, the victim's name could not be released, but police said he is not from Bridgewater, and is still in serious condition.

A 37-year-old man was seriously injured in a after police said another vehicle crossed the grass median and drove into oncoming traffic on Route 22 East.

According to Officer John Mitzak, the man, whose identity was not released, was driving a rented Cheverolet Malibu eastbound on Route 22. The man was injured when Alexandra Gerraputa, 18, of Massapequa, N.Y., was driving on Route 22 West and lost control of her 2004 Honda CRV. Gerraputa then crossed the grass median and drove into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lanes and struck the Cheverolet.

According to police, the 37-year-old male was transported to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and is in critical condition. Gerraputa was not injured in the crash, police said.

The accident, which occurred at about 5 p.m., closed both sides of Route 22 for more than two hours, causing significant rush-hour traffic delays in the area.

Responding to the accident along with police was the New Jersey State DOT, Bridgewater Township Public Works Department, Green Knoll and North Branch Fire departments, Somerset Medical Center 800 Unit Rescue Squad and Somerset Medical Center Paramedics.

The crash is being investigated by the Bridgewater Township Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team. Police are asking any witnesses to contact Bridgewater Township Police Officer Allen Mele at 908-722-4111, ext. 4139.
