Bridgewater Awarded Roadwork Grant Money

It will go toward Country Club Road improvements.

Bridgewater is among hundreds of municipalities receiving funding for street improvement work through New Jersey Department of Transportation's Local Aid grants.

The township will be receiving $140,000 for its Country Club Road Phase III project.

The state is giving more than $78.4 million in grants for street improvements, rehabilitation and safety projects this year, all so they won't be paid for by local taxpayers, according to a release from the NJDOT.

According to the release, 374 of the 661 grant applications were improved, with money awarded for those.

"The Christie Administration strongly supports funding for local aid because it understands how important it is for government at all levels to provide safe streets and roads for motorists and pedestrians alike," said James Simpson, NJDOT commissioner, in the release. "These grants advance local projects without placing a burden on local property taxpayers."

The municipal aid grant program covers projects that include road resurfacing and reconstruction, as well as streetscape improvements and projects that promote walking and biking.

Through the program, a county is apportioned a share of total funding based on population and other factors. From there, municipalities compete for portions, and the NJDOT provides 75 percent of the grant when the town awards a contract and the remaining 25 percent upon completion.

In September, the township applied for grant money for the Country Club Road improvements. The work will take care of areas from Route 28 to the bridge about 1,155 feet north of Route 28.

The township had been requesting $143,765 for the phase three section.
